Radical changes to be made in fish production in hilly areas: Rezaul

DHAKA, Oct 31, 2020 (BSS) – Fisheries and Livestock Minister Rezaul Karim has said that radical changes will be made in fish production in the hilly areas.

“Bangladesh has undergone a revolutionary change in fish production. This change has enhanced our prestige not only in the country but also abroad. Bangladesh is moving forward by breaking all past records in freshwater fish production and hilsa production under the able leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” he said.

The minister was speaking as the chief guest at a briefing meeting of the Bangladesh Fisheries Development Corporation (BFDC) at the Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Center in Rangamati this morning, said a press release.

“From dirty water bodies to small canals, haor-baors, lakes, beels, fish will be farmed everywhere in the country,” said the minister.

BFDC Chairman Kazi Hasan Ahmed presided over the meeting while Fisheries and Livestock Ministry Secretary Raunak Mahmud, Additional Secretary of the Ministry M Taufiqul Arif, Director General of the Department of Fisheries Kazi Shams Afroz, Director General of the Bangladesh Fisheries Research Institute Yahya Mahmud, BFDC Director Rashid Ahmed, Rangamati Hill District Deputy Commissioner AKM Mamunur Rashid, BFDC Kaptai Lake Fisheries Development and Marketing Center Manager Touhidul Islam and Rangamati Sadar Upazila Nibarhi Officer Fatema Tuj Johra were present.

The minister said, fish production in Kaptai Lake has now increased than any time in the past. This time the production has gone up to 12,600 metric tonnes. In the near future, fish production in Kaptai Lake will go up to 15,000 metric tonnes, he added.

“We will get fish, meet their nutritional and non-vegetarian needs, sell the fish in different parts of the country and bring economic prosperity to them. Our current goal is to manage Kaptai Lake so that the lake environment is not polluted. We will systematically improve and enrich Kaptai Lake and increase its heritage. We will increase fish production,” he added.
