35 fishermen jailed , 6 fined for catching hilsha in Manikganj

MANIKGANJ, Oct. 28, 2020 (BSS) – Mobile courts of Fisheries Department with the assistance of local administration sentenced 35 fishermen to different term jail and fined six others on charges of catching Hilsha fish in the river Padma and the Jamuna of the district in last 24 hours .

Preeti Kana Paul, Senior Assistant Director of Department of Fisheries , Manikganj told BSS that 10 mobile courts conducted separate drives in the river Padma and Jamuna of three upazilas -Harirampur, Shibalaya and Daulatpur of the district and sentenced 16 fishermen to one month jail , 15 fishermen to 15 day jail , four others to 10 to 15 day imprisonment and fined six others TK 26,000 for fishing hilsha flouting the ban.

The courts also seized ten boats , 8.06 lac mitre of current nets with 75 kilograms of Hilsha.

The seized fishes were later distributed among the local orphanages and madrasas in the areas, the sources added.
