Two get back candidature in RCC election

RAJSHAHI, July 5, 2018 (BSS)- Two, including one for the mayoral post, have
got back their candidature in the forthcoming election of Rajshahi City
Corporation (RCC) following their appeal with higher authority.

Advocate Murad Murshed for mayor post and Zillar Rahman for general councilor
post got back their candidature.

Earlier, their nomination papers were rejected by the returning officer
during scrutinizing on July 1 and 2 last.

The two candidates filed appeal petitions with commissioner of Rajshahi
division against the decision of returning officer.

After hearing both the sides, Commissioner Nur-Ur-Rahman found their
candidatures valid on Wednesday.

With this, a total of 225 nomination papers, including six for mayoral post,
were found valid for the RCC poll.

Till now, AHM Khairuzzaman Liton (Awami League), Musaddeque Hossain Bulbul
(BNP), Washiur Rahman Dolon (Jatiya Party), Habibur Rahman (Bangladesh Jatiya
Party), Shafiqul Islam (Islami Shashantra Andolan) and Advocate Murad Murshed
(independent) remain in the race for the post of mayor.

Besides, 167 candidates will contest for general councilor posts and 52 for
reserved seats for women in the election.

Returning Officer Syed Amirul Islam told journalists that July 9 has been set
as the final date for withdrawal of candidature.

According to the election schedule, election symbols will be distributed
among the candidates on July 10.

Amirul says all preparations were taken for holding the election on July 30.
After getting election symbol, the candidates can start their formal election
campaign, he said.
