RAJSHAHI, Oct 21, 2020 (BSS)- A mobile court on Tuesday  jailed two fishermen for one month each for catching hilsa from the Padma River defying a government ban.

A river police team led by Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Alamgir Hossain conducted the mobile court in different areas including Sarengpur, Railbazar and Hatpara under Godagari Upazila.

Senior Upazila Fisheries Officer Shamsul Haque and Assistant Fisheries Officer Naimul Haque were present.

The court also seized 10,000 meters of fishing net and three boats from the fishermen. The nets were destroyed at Godagari police station area instantly.

The jailed fishermen are: Muhammad Abdullah, 27, of Ujanpara village and Sajib Ahmed, 30, of Railbazar area under the same upazila.

The Executive Magistrate said all the law-violators will be brought to book as soon as possible.

A 22-day ban on catching, selling, hoarding and transporting of hilsa came into effect from October 14 to protect Hilsa with eggs. The ban will be effective until November 4. This is the peak period when hilsas release eggs.

Alamgir said Hilsa has the highest contribution in the country’s fish production.

Some 1,265 fishermen families received 25.3 tonnes of rice under special vulnerable group feeding (VGF) programme in Godagari upazila areas this season.

The fishermen families were brought under the special VGF programme so that they remain abstained from fishing mother Hilsa fish in the river Padma here.
