Rajshahi to be turned into green metropolis – Liton

RAJSHAHI, July 25, 2020 (BSS) – Rajshahi Mayor AHM Khairuzzaman Liton today said city corporation has embarked upon a plan to make green metropolis through massive tree plantations with ultimate goal for safeguarding the city’s environment and biodiversity.

“All public, private organizations including educational institutions and establishments should supplement the city corporation’s efforts for making massive plantations a success” RCC Mayor made this observation while inaugurating a tree plantation programme at Jahanara Zaman Mini Stadium.

Kishore Football Academy organized the programme in celebration of Mujib Barsha-2020.

As part of the plan, around 500 saplings of different spices of trees will be transplanted during the current season.

The mayor said massive tree plantation can help reduce carbon emission at a substantial level which is very important to protect ecological balance in the region.

Liton said all quarters should take the responsibility of protecting the city and its adjacent areas from the adverse impacts of climate change.

As part of the adaptation measures, massive plantation of trees could play an important role in coping with the adverse impact of global climate change, he added.

“We are also implementing a project titled ‘Zero soil’ to cover all the available top soils with green and various trees” he said adding that plantation of 14,500 tree saplings has been done aiming to safeguard the city’s environment.

Liton urged all city residents to plant tree saplings including the fruit trees in all vacant spaces and other catchment areas of all institutions to create a greenery atmosphere everywhere in the city.

He viewed that there is no alternative to creating more forest area to address the adverse impacts of climate change caused by global warming.

“Tree plantation of fruit can also be the effective means of meeting nutritional demands with food security”, he added.
