DHAKA, June 29, 2020 (BSS) – Families of each person, who died in the launch capsize in Buriganga River today, will get Taka 1.50 lakh as compensation.
State Minister for Shipping Khalid Mahmud Chowdhury made the announcement after visiting the spot and rescue operation at Sadarghat here.
The state minister said Tk 1.50 lakh would be given to the families of each deceased person from the Naval Disaster Fund of Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority (BIWTA). Apart from this, Tk 10,000 will also be provided for burial of each deceased person.
“Dhaka district administration also announced that they would give the families of each victim Tk 20,000,” Khalid added.
He informed that the government has formed a seven-member probe-body hours after the launch capsized in Buriganga River and asked them to submit reports within next seven working days.
“After watching the CCTV footage, it seems that it is not an accident, it’s a murder…. It will also be investigated whether there is any negligence on the part of launch owners,” he added.
A launch named ‘Morning Bird’ carrying over 50 passengers sank in the Buriganga River near Shyambazar here this morning, fire service sources said.
The Fire Service and Civil Defence personnel have so far recovered 32 bodies from the river after the launch accident.
