UGC approves Taka 8485.12 crore for public universities

DHAKA, June 24, 2020 (BSS) – University Grants Commission (UGC) of Bangladesh today has approved a budget of Taka 8485.12 crore for 46 public universities in the country for the 2020-2021 fiscal.

The budget was approved today at a virtual meeting of the 158th full commission of the UGC, chaired by its Chairman Professor Dr Kazi Shahidullah, said a press release.

The budget consists of a revenue budget allocation of Taka 5,454.12 crore, which has been increased by 5% than last year, and a development budget of Taka 3,031 crore in favor of 53 projects.

During the meeting, it was stated that the total budget for the universities last year was Taka 8088.49 crore. Compared to that, the budget this year has been increased by around Taka 397 crore.

Dhaka University has received the highest revenue budget of Taka 830.6 crore in the new financial year. Taka 66.65 crore has been allocated for the research works of public universities, said the release.

The budget was presented at the meeting by UGC Finance and Accounts Department in-charge Prof Dr Muhammad Alamgir, while Ferdous Zaman, UGC Secretary of Additional Responsibilities presented the working paper of the meeting.

UGC members- Prof Dil Afroza Begum, Prof Md Sajjad Hossain, Vice-Chancellor of Islamic University Prof Md Harun-ur-Rashid Askari, Vice-Chancellor of Chittagong Veterinary and Animal Sciences University Prof Gautam Buddha Das, Vice-Chancellor (Acting) of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University of Science and Technology Prof Md Shahjahan, Dean of Khulna University Law School Prof Md Waliul Hasan, Professor of Livestock Production and Management of Sylhet Agricultural University Md Abdul Baset, Professor of Wet Process Engineering of Bangladesh Textile University Md Julhas Uddin, members of UGC Planning Commission (Socio-Economic Infrastructure), Secretary of Secondary and Higher Education under Education Ministry and Additional Secretary of Ministry of Finance were present at the meeting, among others.
