DHAKA, May 31, 2020 (BSS) – The government today fixed bus fares for the coronavirus (COVID-19) crisis period with a 60 percent increase.

The Road Transport and Bridges Ministry issued a gazette notification in this regard today.

The new bus fares will come into effect from June 1 (tomorrow).

The notification said inter-district and long-route buses can be run with limited passengers during the coronavirus crisis period abiding by the government’s conditions.

The government increased fares by 60 percent for inter-district and long-route buses or mini-buses from the rate of fares (Taka 1.42 per passenger for per kilometre) announced by Road Transport and Highways Division on May 3, 2016.

As per the circular of the Road Transport and Highways Division issued on May 3, 2016, the fare of buses is Taka 1.70 per person for per kilometre, while the fare of mini-buses was fixed at Taka 1.60 per person for per kilometre in Dhaka and Chattogram cities. The fares were increased by 60 percent compared to the previous rates, the notification said.

The fares of buses and mini-buses run (in Narayanganj, Munshiganj, Narsingdi, Gazipur, Manikganj and Dhaka districts) under Dhaka Transport Coordination Authority (DTCA) were also increased by 60 percent from the rate of Taka 1.60 per person for per kilometre.

Besides, the government has imposed some conditions on the movement of buses and mini-buses during the COVID-19 crisis period.

As per the conditions, 50 percent seats of a bus or mini-bus must remain vacant, while physical and social distancing must be maintained. No standing passenger would be allowed in these buses and mini-buses.

The notification said the newly fixed fares would remain effective for the COVID-19 crisis period. After the crisis ends, the old bus fares would be applicable.
