IGP joins UNCOPS

DHAKA, June 22, 2018 (BSS) – Inspector General of Police (IGP) Javed Patwari has joined at the 2nd United Nations Chiefs of Police Summit (UNCOPS) UNHQ in New York that began on Thursday.

Remembering the contribution of Bangladesh Police in UN peacekeeping activities Partawi said, “The government has taken tougher steps for combating sexual harassment and indecent behavior in peacekeeping activities.”

He also praised the ‘zero tolerance’ policy taken by the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in this regard, said a press release received here today.

“We need to take more preparation and tactful strategies to face the present and future challenges of UN peacekeepers,” he said stressing developing trainings, supply of essential stuffs and contingency plans for UN peace operations.

Around 11,000 male and female police officers from 89 countries are deployed in 16 UN peace operations.

The participants discussed how peace operations and national policing complements can mutually reinforce each other when addressing current and emerging challenges.

The summit brought together ministers, chiefs of police and police representatives from 193 countries on June 20-21, where they planned a vision for UN Police and elicit commitments to strengthen its ability to effectively prevent and address security threats before they transcend borders.
