Over one lakh destitute families get rice in Khulna

KHULNA, APRIL 09, 2020 (BSS) – The Khulna district administration has distributed rice and cash among 100,000 destitute people in different parts of the city and district to mitigate their hardship caused by the outbreak of coronavirus.

“We have already allocated 950 tonnes of rice and Taka 26 lakh in cash to all the nine upazilas, municipalities and city corporation in Khulna for distribution of 10 kg of rice among 1, 00,000 destitute families each with the assistance of the local union parishad chairmen, members and word councillors,” said Khulna deputy commissioner Md Helal Hossain while addressing a press conference at circuit house conference room here today.

Mayor of Khulna City Corporation Talukder Abdul Khaleque, Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Ziaur Rahman and President of Khulna Press Club S M Nazrul Islam, among others, were present.

Deputy Commissioner Md Helal Hossain said apart from the allocation, the government has allocated 800 tonnes rice and Taka 41 lakh in cash to distribute in Khulna.

Meanwhile, DC Helal Hossain served a notice yesterday imposing ban on entry and exit of all the people and transport to and from Khulna district which came into effect last night.

The notice also said essential and utility services providing vehicles and individuals, who have government permission will be out of the purview of the suspension.

Khulna district administration also issued some directives asking for closing the kitchen markets and the super shops in the city and district within 7pm.

The kitchen markets and the super shops will remain open from 7am to 7 pm while the medicine stores and other emergency services will remain out of purview of the directives.

On April 6, Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) have put Khulna city under lockdown to avert further spread of COVID-19.
