Domingo doesn’t want raging turner against Zimbabwe in one-off Test

DHAKA, Feb 21, 2020 (BSS) – When there was widespread belief that Bangladesh would use a raging turner to beat Zimbabwe in solitary Test and stave off the six-match losing streak in longer version format, Russell Domingo, the head coach of the team said, he is not willing to play in this sort of wicket.

In the recent home series, Bangladesh beat the teams like Australia, England in a designed wicket, that was used to turn from the day one. Even in recent victory against Zimbabwe, their spinners ruled the batsmen of the
Southern African nation.

But Domingo warned of playing such sort of wicket excessively as he wants to prepare Bangladesh to deal with the foreign condition.

“For Bangladesh to improve in Test cricket, we can’t play on raging turners
all the time. Because then you will only pick one seamer and then you go to
India, South Africa or Australia you start wondering who is your three
seamers or who is our four seamers because they haven’t played any cricket.
It’s a fine balance,” he said.

“We know that the strength of the team is to play on spinning wickets and
particularly against teams like Australia, New Zealand or South Africa, you
want your wickets to spin but we have also got to teach ourselves and learn
how to play on good wickets so that the seamers are in the game and batsmen
can bat to score big runs.”

“If they play on tough wickets, half the batsmen will get big hundreds and
also puts the bowlers into a false sense of security because the wicket is
spinning. They think they are good bowlers because the wicket is spinning and
the seamers think they are bad cause the wicket is not seaming.”

Domingo said he is adamant to play on a good wicket for the betterment of
the team in future.

“It’s a tough thing for the team to come to grips with. I am strong on the
fact that we have to play on good wickets so that we can develop our game not
only at home but outside of Bangladesh as well. If we keep playing on
spinning wickets, wherever we go, we got no chance.”

The South African also clarified what is good wicket in his view.

“I want good cricket wickets. I want our seamers to bowl in day one and
the spinners to come into play on day three, four and five. Batsmen have to
deal with first session on day one and it becomes easier and then again
become difficult. For sure, Bangladesh have done well when the wickets have
spun, particularly against teams like Australia, England and South Africa.
But for the development of the team, we need to have a bigger picture in mind
as well.”
