RANGPUR, Feb 20, 2020 (BSS) – Farmer Nazrul Islam has succeeded in cultivating flowers on sandy char lands in Char Sardob village of Halokhana union in Sadar upazila of Kurigram.

After achieving incredible success in cultivating flowers on 30 decimals
of char lands and earning lucrative profits last season, Nazrul has brought
65 decimals of char lands under flower gardening this season.

“I have cultivated marigold on 30 decimals of sandy-loamy char lands,
gladiolus on 15 decimals and rose on 20 decimals of char lands this season,”
said Nazrul while talking to the national news agency.

The garden is now full of flowers with eye-catching look, colour and
descent smell.

“I have already sold marigold, rose and gladiolus flowers worth Taka
four lakh this year,” Nazrul said, adding that he expects to sell more
flowers worth Taka two-lakh effortlessly.

The sale of Nazrul’s flowers sharply increased since the last Valentines
Day and before observance of the Shaheed Dibash and International Mother
Language Day-2020.

“I started cultivating flowers experimentally on 35 decimals of char
lands after bringing saplings from Jashore district last season and began
selling flowers within only one month,” Nazrul said.

Observing the brighter prospect of cultivating flowers on char lands
last year, Nazrul switched over to farming flowers on his char lands this
season excluding maize cultivation.

“The ‘Meem Puspaloy’, a flower selling shop in Kurigram district town,
is purchasing all flowers being produced in my garden. I am earning well and
the shop is getting smooth supply of flowers to make good business,” he said.

Flowers are being cultivated from October to March though the production
reduces during the period of floods.

“Currently, I am selling each piece of rose at Taka 10 and gladiolus at
Taka 10 and every 100 pieces of marigold at Taka 45 on an average,” Nazrul
said.

Talking to BSS, proprietor Manik Mian of ‘Meem Puspaloy’ in Kurigram
town said flowers were being brought from Jashore to meet 100 percent of
local demand in Kurigram even a couple of years ago.

“But, the scenario started changing from last year when Deputy
Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin initiated commercial basis
cultivation of flowers at Chhinai union of nearby Rajarhat upazila,” Manik
said.

This year, flowers are being cultivated on one acre of the mainland in
Chhinai union alone along with its expanding cultivation on char areas
creating a new possibility of flower gardening in the district.

“At present, we are meeting a larger portion of flower demand with the
flowers produced in Kurigram. It is possible to meet the total demand of
flowers with locally produced flowers in the district in the near future,”
Manik hoped.

Talking to BSS, Deputy Commissioner of Kurigram Sultana Pervin said
farmers are being encouraged to cultivate flowers because of the prevailing
huge potential of flower cultivation in the district.

“The farmers are now getting benefits from cultivation of flowers both
on the mainland and char areas of Kurigram where many others also started
showing interest in flower cultivation,” she added.
