Students asked to become aware of food adulteration

RANGPUR, Feb 19, 2020 (BSS) – Academics at a workshop today asked students to become aware of food adulteration and create awareness for strict enforcement of the related laws to ensure supply of pure and safe foods.

They made the observation today at an awareness raising workshop on food safety issues arranged for students marking the Mujib Year at central cafeteria of Begum Rokeya University, Rangpur (BRUR) on its campus in the
city.

The Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) organised the workshop with
assistance of BRUR with Director (External Affairs) of the university
Professor Dr Md Nazmul Haque in the chair.

Acting Chairman of Bangladesh Food Safety Authority (BFSA) Md Mahbub Kabir
attended the event as the chief guest.

Moderated by Deputy Controller of Examinations of BRUR Md Shamsul Haque,
Member of BFSA Professor Dr Abdul Alim, General Secretary of Begum Rokeya
University Teachers’ Association Tabiur Rahman Prodhan and Registrar Colonel
(Retd) Abu Hena Mustafa Kamal addressed the workshop.

The speakers put importance on creating mass public awareness on severe
consequences of supply, sale and consumption of adulterated foods on public
health.

They said students should take a leading role in mobilising public onion
in favour of strict enforcement of the Safe Food Act 2013, Consumers’ Right
Protection Act, 2009 and Fish Feed and Animal Feed Act, 2010 to ensure supply
of safe foods.

The chief guest said common people are becoming more aware of their rights
to get pure food products and the government has taken various steps for
reaching pure and hygienic food to them.

“The authorities concerned will start conducting frequent raids by mobile
courts across Rangpur region soon to ensure supply of pure and hygienic food
products in local markets,” he added.

Professor Dr Md Nazmul Haque suggested for taking stringent measures
against production, supply and marketing of adulterated foods to protect
public health for building a healthier nation to attain sustainable
development goals.
