Govt implementing projects to deplete unplanned ground water lifting : Tajul

SANGSAD BHABAN, Jan 29, 2020 (BSS) – Local Government Minister Muhammad Tajul Islam today said the government is implementing different development projects in the urban and rural areas for depleting unplanned lifting of underground water.

“The Department of Public Health Engineering (DPHE) under the local government division is
implementing different development projects in the urban and rural areas for reducing unplanned raising of ground water,” he said while responding a star-marked question made by treasury bench lawmaker Mamtaz Begum of Manikganj-2 in the House here.

Under the project, it is underway to excavate 200 new ponds and re-excavating of 952 ponds to make water supply available for the people in the rural areas, he added.

Of the total ponds, excavation of 17 new ponds and re-excavation of 576 ponds have already been completed under the two projects, Tajul told the parliament.

Besides, the DPHE has taken a programme of setting up 12,235 ‘rain water harvesters’ under the five projects, he said, adding that 7,932 rain water harvesters have already been set up.

As part of the government’s initiative to reduce pressure on the ground water, the LGRD Minister said the government has set up 200 underground water refinery unit at seventeen upazilas in Rangamati, Bagherhat and Faridpur district.
