Dhaka, Jan 23, 2020 (BSS) – Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud today described the order of the United Nation’s top court on the Rohingya issue is in favour of humanity, saying that this order is a huge development for protecting the rights of Rohingyas.
“The order is a huge development in regard to protecting the rights of Rohingyas. It is a good instruction favouring humanity,” he told journalists at the International Mother Language Institute in the city.
The International Court of Justice (ICJ) in The Hague granted a series of emergency steps requested by the mainly Muslim African state of The Gambia under the 1948 Genocide Convention.
The minister said the court has ordered that Myanmar will never break the ‘Genocide Convention’, Myanmar army or any other armed groups will not engage in massacres or similar acts in any way, the evidence of all the genocide and destruction that took place earlier should be preserved and after the next four months, a ‘Compliance Report’ should be submitted for the execution of the court order, which should continue to be submitted every six months until further order.
Hasan hoped that Myanmar will stop such kind of atrocity and take back around 11 lakh forcefully displaced Rohingyas though giving full citizenship.
According to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU), he said, Bangladesh has moved up eight notches on the latest Democracy Index 2019, compared to the previous year.
Bangladesh is much ahead from Pakistan, Myanmar and Nepal, that means the allegation of different groups and opposition parties, that there have no democracy and freedom of speech, have no base, he added.
As per the Transparency International, Bangladesh (TIB), the information minister said, Bangladesh has moved three notches up in the 2019 Corruption Perceptions Index (CPI).
The progresses of the two indicators prove that good governance has been established in the country under the leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, he added.
