Digital Bangladesh fair kicks off in city

DHAKA, Jan 16, 2020 (BSS) – A three-day ‘Digital Bangladesh Mela’ was kicked off today aiming to demonstrate benefits of 5G technology and information technology as well and advancement of the Digital Bangladesh campaign.

Prime Minister’s ICT Affairs Adviser Sajeeb Wazed Joy inaugurated the fair in capital’s Bangabandhu International Conference Centre (BICC) with the theme “Highways of Technology in Bangabandhu’s Sonar Bangla”.

Both government and private entities in the digital technology sector are taking part in the event, organized by Posts and Telecommunications Division. Posts and Telecommunications Minister Mustafa Jabbar chaired the function, also addressed by ministry’s parliamentary standing committee chairman AKM Rahmatullah, secretary of the ministry Nur-ur-Rahman and China-based Huawei Technologies (Bangladesh) Ltd CEO Zhang Zhengjun.

One of the main goals of the Digital Bangladesh Mela is to highlight the advancement and innovation of digital technology, ensure suitable human resources, build a bridge between mass people and advanced digital technology as well as showcase progress of “Digital Bangladesh” campaign.

Addressing the function, the posts and telecommunications minister said following the successes of Bangladesh in rolling out the Digital Bangladesh campaign, India announced such campaign in 2014 followed by the Maldives in 2015 and Pakistan in December 2019.

“Bangladesh has now been transformed into a country now exporting digital devices ……Bangladesh is now exporting mobile phones to the USA alongside exporting laptops to Nigeria and Nepal. We’ll export motherboards very soon,” he added.

A total of 82 firms, including ISPs, are showcasing broadband internet, triple play technology (land phone, internet and cable TV connection in single cable), mobile apps, parental control and other technologies.

Booklets are being distributed among the visitors free of cost on the fair premises highlighting various aspects of digital security as the government is working across the country to create awareness about the digital security.

The government is working to frame a “roadmap” for the 5G technology to help people avail the facilities from IOT, robotics, big data or block chain.

He said that the visitors at the Mela would be able to get access without any fee through registering at https//www.digitalbangladeshmela.org.bd/.

During the fair, tech giants like Samsung, Walton, Symphony and other firms are displaying their products.

In addition, different technology vendors with the cooperation of mobile phone operators are demonstrating 5G technology. Moreover, child programming and robotic education along with telemedicine will also be taught in the fair.

Apart from this, ZTE, Huawei, Nokia and Erikson are demonstrating 5G technology as well as various dimensions of live telecast while telemedicine and ATM services would be operated through using Bangabandhu Satellite.

Ministers and experts from home and abroad are taking part in the fair and exchanging views in the seminars about possible technological destinations in future.

Different ministries, divisions and departments of government are highlighting their progress in the field of digitization in some 25 stalls, 29 mini pavilions and 28 pavilions.

In addition, the fair has a separate corner for Bangabandhu, where life and works of the Father of the Nation Sheikh Mujibur Rahman are being portrayed through digital technology.
