10 killed in landslide in NE India

NEW DELHI, June 5, 2018 (BSS/XINHUA) – At least 10 people have been killed
in a landslide in the northeastern Indian state of Mizoram, police said
Tuesday.

The landslide happened in Lunglei town and was triggered by heavy rains
that started lashing large parts of southern Mizoram since late Monday night.

“The victims lost their lives after their house was swept away by the
landslide. One person who sustained injuries in the natural disaster has been
hospitalised,” a police official said.

The district disaster response team has rushed to the spot. “Rescue
workers are searching for bodies and other people feared trapped in the
debris since this morning,” he said.

Landslides are common in northern and northeastern India in the monsoon
season from July to September as well as in the pre-monsoon month of June.

In June last year, some 10 people were killed and several went missing
after flash floods and landslides caused by heavy rains wreaked havoc in
Lunglei district.
