Govt devises initiatives to face climate change: Dr Hasan

DHAKA, Nov 28, 2019 (BSS) – As Bangladesh is one the most vulnerable nations to climate change, the Awami League government has been implementing different initiatives to face the challenges of climate change.

This was stated by Information Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud at the closing ceremony of an international conference on “Environmental Solutions for Sustainable Development: Towards Developed Bangladesh” in the city.

“Bangladesh is one the worst victims of climate change. The Awami League government is implementing different initiatives to face the adverse impacts of climate change,” he told the function at CIRDAP auditorium here.

Awami League Sub-Committee on Forest and Environment arranged the two-day conference.

Dr Hasan, also AL Publicity and Publication Secretary, said even when AL was not in power it had arranged many seminars and symposiums on conservation of environment and it played an important role in formulating ‘Climate Change Action Plan’.

In 1983, Awami League President Sheikh Hasina had taken a tree plantation programme with a view to conserving the environment, he said, adding that since then, the AL is observing the programme every year.

He said Awami League is the country’s first political party which introduced environment secretary post in the party.

The information minister mentioned that Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina was awarded the UN’s highest environmental accolade – Champions of the Earth – in recognition of Bangladesh’s far-reaching initiatives to address climate change.

Highlighting different development activities and achievements of the government, Dr Hasan said the country is now self-reliant in food production and it attained an outstanding success in readymade garments (RMG) sector.

He said the development activities and achievements of the country are being lauded at home and abroad.

Dr Hasan called for building a developed nation to turn the country into a developed one.

Presided over by Chairman of Awami League Sub-Committee on Forest and Environment Professor Bazlul Haque Khandker, the function was addressed by AL International Affairs Secretary Dr Shammi Ahmed and Dhaka University Chemistry Department Professor Dr Md Aftab Ali Sheikh, among others.

The sub-committee’s member secretary Delwar Hossain moderated the function.

Later, the information minister joined the premier show of a movie titled “No Dorai” based on the life of a surfer in Cox’s Bazar and made in dialect of Chattogram at the Star Cineplex at Basundhara City shopping mall here.
