Date-expired drugs worth Tk 34cr destroyed, says govt report to HC

DHAKA, Nov 19, 2019 (BSS) – The government destroyed date-expired medicines worth about Taka 34.08 crore and realized about Taka 1.75 crore as fine from different pharmacies for storing adulterated and date-expired drugs in the last two months.

The date-expired medicines were destroyed and fines were realized by mobile courts conducted by the Directorate General of Drug Administration (DGDA) from August 1 to October 31, 2019 across the country.

This information was revealed in a report submitted by the DGDA to the High Court (HC) today as per its earlier order during hearing a writ petition filed by Mahfuzur Rahman, executive director of Justice Watch Foundation, a human rights organisation.

The HC bench of Justice FRM Nazmul Ahasan and Justice KM Kamrul Kader fixed December 12 for further hearing on the issue.

Barrister ABM Altaf Hossain appeared for the writ petitioner.

Deputy Attorney General Abdullah Mahmud Bashar stood for the state and Advocate Kamruzzaman Kachi stood for the Directorate of National Consumer Rights Protection (DNCRP) while Advocate Shah Monjurul Hoque stood for Bangladesh Association of Pharmaceutical Industries.
