UN honours 4 fallen Bangladeshi peacekeepers

DHAKA, June 2, 2018 (BSS) – Four fallen Bangladeshi peacekeepers were honoured at the United Nations (UN) Headquarters in New York on Friday.

The four fallen peacekeepers of Bangladesh are sergeant Md Altaf Hossain, lance corporal Md Jakirul Alam Sarkar, Sipahi Md Monowar Hossain and Soldier Md Abdur Rahim, a press release of Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United Nations said.

Altaf, Jakirul and Monowar lost their lives while serving with the United Nations during a mission in Mali on September 24, 2017 while Rahim was serving with the UN during a mission in the Central African Republic in January 5 in 2017.

Commemorating the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers at its headquarters in New York, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres paid tributes to members of UN peacekeeping mission, who sacrificed their lives while serving at the different missions, at the UN peacekeeping site.

Permanent Representative of Bangladesh to the UN Ambassador Masud Bin Momen received medals for the four Bangladeshi peacekeepers at a function.

Permanent officials of different missions of UN member countries, military and civil officials and diplomats, among others, were present at the function.

Marking the occasion of the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers, the Dag Hammarskjold Medals were awarded to 128 peacekeepers of 37 countries, who lost their lives during peacekeeping mission.
