Govt moves to construct chancery complex in Jeddah

DHAKA, Oct 21, 2019 (BSS) – The government has initiated a move to set up
a chancery complex at Jeddah in Saudi Arabia in a bid to facilitate the
operations of the Bangladesh mission at Jeddah.

The operations of Bangladesh mission in Jeddah is currently run in a
rented house while the government has already procured 154 Katha land in two
separate plots for constructing the chancery complex and the ambassador’s
house there.

In line with the land purchase deal signed with the Saudi government, the
government of Bangladesh has to construct a chancery complex on that
purchased land.

Under the circumstances, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has drafted a
project for construction of the chancery complex in Jeddah, said a Senior
Planning Commission official.

“After necessary formalities, the project is likely to be placed at a
meeting of the ECNEC tomorrow for its consideration,” he added.

ECNEC Chairperson and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina will preside over the
meeting to be held at the NEC Conference Room in the city’s Sher-e-Bangla
Nagar area.

The Planning Commission official said Bangladesh Consulate General in
Jeddah will implement the project with an estimated cost of Taka 208.79 crore
to be completed by September 2023.

Under the project, the chancery complex would be built at Bogdadia area in
Jeddah.

The chancery complex building would be three-storey having a space of
6,354 square meter. Besides, there will be officers’ residential building
having a space of 6060 square meter, staff residential building having a
space of 6300 square meter.

The Planning Commission official said once the project is implemented,
improved working environment and living condition would be ensured for the
officials and staffs at the Bangladesh mission in Jeddah.

The Pre Evaluation Committee (PEC) meeting on the project was held on July
4 this year where the meeting suggested for moving ahead with the project
subject to some restructuring of it.
