Bangladesh marching ahead in parliamentary democracy : Speaker

DHAKA, Oct 14, 2019 (BSS) – Bangladesh is marching ahead in the parliamentary democracy practice under the continuous leadership of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

“A total of 50 parliamentary committees have been formed for playing an important role to ensure transparency and accountability of the government,” said Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury while her Algerian counterpart Slimane Chenine made a courtesy call with her at IPU venue center at Belgrade in Serbia on Sunday evening.

Dr Shirin Sharmin, is now visiting Serbia for participating in the 141th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU)

During the call on, they discussed on different bilateral issues, parliamentary practice, inter-parliamentary friendship group formation, economic and social development of Bangladesh and elimination of terrorism.

Terming the relations between Bangladesh and Algeria as historical, the Speaker said, “Algeria has given recognition to Bangladesh immediately after the independence led by Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.”

Even the address of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur is still “memorable” one which had been delivered at the Non Aligned Movement (NAM) conference in 1973 at Algiers, she said. “Bangladesh, has now reached at unparallel height in terms of development and country’s growth rate now propelled at 8 per cent,” said the Speaker.

Besides, the country has now strengthened its position in all development indexes including social and economy spheres as well, said Dr Shirin.

“The present bilateral relations which are being prevailed between the two countries could be more strengthened through forming a parliamentary friendship group,” said the Algerian counterpart during the discussion.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh parliamentary delegation led by Jatiya Sangsad Speaker Dr Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury has participated in the opening session of 141th assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) at Serbia’s capital Belgrade on Sunday night.

Serbian President Aleksander Vucic inaugurated the 141th IPU conference.

Prior to this, IPU President Gabriela Cuevas Barron and Serbia parliament speaker Ms. Maja Gojkovic, also a President of the 141th IPU conference, spoke on the occasion.

The visiting Bangladesh parliamentary delegation includes Deputy Speaker M Fazle Rabbi Mia, Chief Whip Nur-E Alam Chowdhury, whip Abu Sayeed Al-Mamun Shawpan, chairman of the JS body on the Ministry of Commerce Tofail Ahmed, Chairman of the JS body on the Ministry of Industries Amir Hossain Amu, lawmakers M Habib-e Millat ,Fahmi Golondaz Babel, Abdus Salam Murshedy, Pir Fazlur Rahman, Subarna Mustafa, Sabnam Jahan and

Bangladesh envoy in Italy Abdus Sobhan Sikder, who among others, participated in the programme.

More than 1500 parliamentary representatives including 80 Speakers and 60 deputy speakers from 140 countries across the world participated in the IPU conference.
