RAJSHAHI, May 29, 2018 (BSS) – The International Day of United Nations
Peacekeepers was observed here today in a befitting manner.

Marking the day, Rajshahi Metropolitan Police (RMP) organised a UN
peacekeepers rally from Alupatty crossing in the city to honour the memories
of the UN peacekeepers who laid down their lives for the cause of peace and
security in the war-torn countries across the world.

After parading some thoroughfares, the rally ended at Rajshahi College.
Then a discussion was held at the college auditorium highlighting the
significance of the day.

Deputy Inspector General of Police of Rajshahi Range Khurshid Hossain,
Additional Commissioner of RMP Sujayet Islam, Additional Deputy Inspector
General of Police of Rajshahi Range Masudur Rahman Bhuiyan, RAB-5 Commanding
Officer Lt Col Mahbubul Alam, Principal of Rajshahi College Prof Habibur
Rahman and Awami League Leader Dablu Sarker spoke on the occasion.

DIG Khurshid Hossain said the purpose of observing the day is to
underscore the importance of maintaining global peace, pay tribute to those
who are involved in the peacekeeping missions and honour the UN peacekeepers
who lost their lives.

The Day, 29 May, offers a chance to pay tribute to the contributions of
uniformed and civilian personnel to the work of the organization and to
honour more than 3,700 peacekeepers who have lost their lives serving under
the UN flag since 1948, including 129 who died last year.

Combined Forces of Bangladesh (BCF) and Bangladesh Police (BP) are
working with the International Peace Keeping activities for the last two
decades and performing their duties successfully, he added.

Bangladesh lost a total of 139 peacekeepers since 1988, the year it
started sending peacekeepers to conflict-stricken countries to establish
peace there, according to the Permanent Mission of Bangladesh to the United
Nations.

Currently, 7,053 including 781 BP peacekeepers from Bangladesh are
serving in various countries. Bangladesh’s participation in the UN
peacekeeping missions has become an important component of foreign policy.
