Bumper jute production makes farmers happy in Narail

NARAIL, July 25, 2017 (BSS) – Bumper jute production has brought smile on the faces of farmers of three upazilas in the district as they got fair price for the crop in the current season.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) had a target of cultivating jute on 23,615 hectares of land here, but jute was cultivated on 23,725 hectares exceeding the target.

DAE office sources said, of the total jute was cultivated on 8,175 hectares of land in Sadar upazila, 12,350 hectares in Lohagara upazila and 3,200 hectares in Kalia upazila of the district.

Deputy Director of DAE Sheikh Aminul Haque told BSS that the farmers of the area were found interested in jute farming on more new lands due to logistic support by the government and availability of seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other agri-inputs in a favourable climatic condition.

Apart from this, the jute growers evinced keen interest to cultivate jute on more lands this year as they got fair prices of the crop than last year side by side with getting necessary cooperation from different state-run agencies and banks including Bangladesh Agricultural Development Corporation (BADC), Bangladesh Chemical Industries Corporation (BCIC), DAE and Bangladesh Krishi Bank and Sonali Bank, Sheikh Aminul Haque said.
