Landslides kill 4 in Cox’s Bazar

COX’S BAZAR, July 25, 2017 (BSS)-At least four people, including two minors, were killed and four others injured in two separate incidents of landslide in Cox’s Bazar district in the early hours of today.

Fire service and hospital sources said the fatal landslides caused by intermittent heavy rainfalls hit Lighthouse area of the town and Chainda village of Ramu upazila of the district at about 3am.

In the lighthouse area incident, One Mohammad Shahed, 18, died on the spot and three others-Saddam Hossain, 28, Delwar Hossain, 25, and Arafat Hossain, 30,- suffered critical injuries. The injured were admitted to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital where Saddam died.

The Ramu landslide took its heavy toll on a sleeping family of four killing on the spot two minor children- Zisan, 7, and his sister Saima,5. But fortunately the couple-Ziaur Rahman,35, and his wife Anarkoli,29-were reused alive by the fire service personnel. They are now being treated at Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital.

The authorities concerned have expressed apprehension of further landsides in the district as rainfalls are likely to continue in the region.
