GAIBANDHA, Aug 21, 2019 (BSS) – Some 56 floating seed beds of Aman paddy
have been prepared in all the seven upazilas of the district during the
current season at the initiatives of the Department of Agricultural Extension
(DAE).

DAE office sources said the objective of the floating seed beds preparation
is to inspire the farmers to adapt with the changed climatic condition so
that they could prepare floating seed bed in future amid climate change.

Of them, 8 seed beds have been prepared in Sadar upazila, 4 in Sadullapur
upazila, 5 in Palashbari upazila and Gobindaganj upazila each, and 12 in
Sundarganj upazila and Shaghata upazila each, sources said.

The seedlings grew well and became healthy at the seed beds. Within seven
days, the seedlings would be transplanted on the water land after raising
them from the floating seed beds, said district training officer of DAE
Showkat Osman.

Every day, the enthusiastic farmers coming from neighboring areas are
visiting the floating seed beds to have a glimpse and exchanging the views
with sub assistant agriculture officers concerned on how and for what the
seed beds have been prepared.

Deputy director of DAE Dr. SM Ferdous said early-floods are visiting the
district when the farmers are supposed to prepare seed bed on their land.

But, it is delayed to remove the flood water from the land, as a result,
they cannot prepare seed beds timely, he also said.

After removing water, the farmers prepare seed bed on their land, but the
growers cannot get desired output against the crop for transplanting the
seedlings lately, he added.

The trial to preparing floating seed bed has started in the district so
that the farmers can prepare floating seed bed at the time of flood in future
to keep up the food production okayed, the DD concluded.
