Coordinated efforts to attain SDGs underscored

 RAJSHAHI, May 9, 2018 (BSS) – Experts and researchers here emphasized the need for taking concerted efforts of all government and non-government organisations for achieving Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and overall development of the nation.

They mentioned that partnership and collaboration among concerned authorities could also make easier to extract resources needed for implementing the SDGs. To this end, sustainable coordinated efforts are the demand of the time.

The observations came at a daylong divisional workshop titled “Implementing SDGs in Bangladesh: From Plan to Action” in Rajshahi city yesterday.

Department of Development Studies (DDS) in Dhaka University and Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) jointly organized the workshop.

Former Governor of Bangladesh Bank Dr Atiur Rahman and Chairman of DDS Professor Dr Abu Eusuf addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively with Nur-Ur-Rahman, Commissioner of Rajshahi Division, in the chair.

DDS Professor Dr Taiabur Rahman and Additional Commissioner Jakir Hossain also spoke.

Dr Rahman said that Bangladesh government has taken a number of initiatives for achieving the SDGs, hoping the government would be successful in achieving the targets as the country already achieved the MDGs.

He urged government officials to focus on crops, livestock, forestry, fisheries and aquaculture as those are powerful phenomenon to reduce poverty and hunger.

To this end, personal commitment is very important to implement SDGs. “If we are committed to our own responsibility, SDGs could be achieved,” he added.

Rahman, however, urged all concerned to discharge their duties with utmost sincerity and honesty to supplement the government endeavor to achieve SDGs within the stipulated time.

He appreciated the initiative of the FAO to bring unity among all government and non-government entities concerned to promote awareness and knowledge-sharing on key issues of food and agriculture.
