Govt bringing poor under social safety net: Nuruzzaman

DHAKA, July 25, 2019 (BSS) – Social Welfare Minister Nuruzzaman Ahmed today said the government is bringing the backward and poor people under social safety net to improve their living standard.

“Micro credits are being given to low-income people in urban areas to eradicate poverty,” he said while addressing the closing ceremony of leadership orientation programme at the minister’s hostel conference room at Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) on Extreme Poverty and Urban Pavement Dwellers organized the function on “Development of living standard of urban poor people and ensuring of fundamental rights: role of lawmakers to reduce discrimination and poverty”.

Chaired by Harun-or-Rashid, MP, the function was addressed by Centre for Urban Studies (CUS) Chairman Professor Nazrul Islam and Concern Worldwide Country Director Dr AKM Musa. Nuruzzaman said the government is imparting vocational training to poor segment of people and giving them interest-free loans for improving their living standard.

Urban poor people are being given up to Taka 50,000 loan each under the micro-credit programme, he said adding that a total of 1,30,891 families have reaped the benefits out of this programme.
