Bumper mango production likely in Rangpur region
RANGPUR, April 26, 2018 (BSS) – Officials and experts of the Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) are excepting bumper production of mango following smooth formation of the tender fruits in Rangpur agriculture region this season.
“Over 90 percent of mango trees bloomed and the fruit setting stage is progressing excellently now in the orchards and homestead areas,” said Horticulture Specialist of the DAE Khondker Md Mesbahul Islam.
The farmers cultivated mango on 7,091 hectares of land and produced 79,667 tonnes of the popular seasonal fruit worth over Taka 300 crore last year in five districts in the region.
“The farmers have cultivated mango on 7,500 hectares of land this season in Rangpur, Gaibandha, Kurigram, Lalmonirhat and Nilphamari districts under the region where commercial basis mango cultivation has been expanding every year,” he added.
The farmers are largely cultivating popular mango varieties like ‘Haribhanga’, ‘Rajbhog’, ‘Kapilbangri’, ‘Echhakteli’, ‘Misribhog’, BARI Am-2, BARI Am-4, ‘Gopalbhog’, ‘Lengra’, ‘Fazlee’, ‘Lakhna’ and ‘Amrapali’ in the region.
Islam advised the farmers for nursing their orchards and control pests’ attacks, if any, with temperature rise at this stage.
“The farmers can spray insecticides of the Delta Methrin or Cyper groups at the recommended dose or suggested level to the small-sized growing mangoes for combating mango hoppers,” he said.
He said the farmers could spray Sevin 85 wp (wait-able powder) group pesticides with water at the recommended dose or suggested level to the growing mangoes if the temperature rises.
“In addition, the farmers can spray fungicides of the Mencozeb or Propiconazole groups at the recommended or suggested dose during the fruit formation period to get better production of mango,” Islam added.
Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office here Md Moniruzzaman said the farmers are showing more interests in farming mango on commercial basis after getting repeated bumper production with huge profits in recent years.
