DHAKA, May 23, 2019 (BSS) – Information Minister and Awami League Publicity and Publication Secretary Dr Hasan Mahmud today called for building united resistance against river encroachment and pollution.

“We have to save our rivers from the grasp of the influential clique. We have to build united resistance against river encroachment and pollution,” he told a discussion in Press Club auditorium here.

Nongor and Nadi Rakkha Jote organized the discussion on “Demand for announcing May 23 as National River Day and Role of Mass Media to Protect River and Environment”.

National River Conservation Commission Chairman Dr Muzibur Rahman Howlader and Poribesh Bachao Andolon (POBA) Chairman Abu Naser addressed it, among others, with Nongor President Sumon Shams in the chair.

Expressing solidarity with the movement to conserve rivers, Hasan Mahmud said the government has taken different initiatives to conserve the rivers and the environment.

The minister said illegal establishment on the riverbanks of Buriganga and Karnaphuli has already been removed and this drive will continue in future to save the rivers.

“River is the life of Bangladesh. If we cannot save our rivers, it will be very dangerous for the country. So, it is a must to free the river from pollution,” he said.
