DHAKA, May 7, 2019 (BSS) – The World Thalassemia Day will be observed tomorrow in the country as elsewhere in the globe to raise awareness about the disease.

This year’s theme of the day is “Make-sure electrophoresis test of blood before marriage to protect the upcoming new born baby from thalassemia”.

World Thalassemia Day is celebrated every year on May 8 in order to raise the public awareness about this disease, prevention measures and measures to avoid its transmission among the common people throughout the world.

Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina today issued a message wishing a success of the day’s programmes.

The Prime Minister said, “The Awami League government is implementing extensive programmes to develop the country’s health sector”.

The infant mortality rate has been reduced remarkably due to the government programmes in ensuring better health for mothers and children, she said, adding “We have launched special arrangement at Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University for thalassemia treatment”.

Every year around 7,000 new babies are born with thalassemia in Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina said, adding that the disease can be easily prevented through creating awareness among the adult men and women about thalassemia.

Along with the government, Sheikh Hasina urged all concerned to come forward in preventing the disease.
