CHATTOGRAM, May 2, 2019 (BSS)- Chattogram District Administration has taken necessary preparations to face the impending severe cyclone ‘Fani’ after hoisting the danger signal number six for the country’s principal seaport.
Chattogram Port Authority (CPA) has already stopped loading and unloading of goods from the vessels anchored both port jetties and its outer anchorage from 10 am today in the backdrop of the cyclonic storm that formed over east central Bay.
“The vessels, anchored at the jetties are being taken to the safer places especially in outer anchorage with a view to protecting the jetties from any impending destruction likely to be caused by the cyclone,” CPA Secretary Omar Farook told BSS.
Meanwhile, the district administration in an emergency meeting this morning has taken up brisk preparations comprising all public utility departments and concerned agencies to cope with any eventuality of the cyclonic storm Fani.
The meeting, chaired by acting Deputy Commissioner (DC) Delwar Hossain decided to standby medical teams, with adequate relief materials including drinking water and dry foods in all shelter centres during pre and post cyclone situation.
Delwar Hossain said a total of 2,758 cyclone shelter centres including 2,269 primary schools have been opened in all coastal upazilas of the district.
Around eight lakh people of the coastal upazilas including Sandwip, Banskhali, Anowara, Sitakunda and Mirsari are expected to take shelter in those cyclone centers, he said.
Leaves of all officials, employees, doctors and nurses of the areas have been cancelled and kept ready standby to face any eventuality of the Fani, said Delwar, also chairman of the district disaster management committee.
“Announcement through loud speakers for raising mass awareness about the cyclone began this morning and it will be continued until further notice,” he said.
A total of 284 hundred medical teams with 5,000 health workers, adequate number of volunteers of the Red Crescent Society have been kept ready and district administration is monitoring round the clock in this regard, said Dr Azizur Rahman, civil surgeon of Chattogram.
CPA, district administration, Chattogram Civil Surgeon, Chattogram City Corporation and Red Crescent Society have separately opened up control rooms to monitor the pre and post cyclonic storm Fani.
Adequate number of vehicles of Chattogram City Corporation (CCC) is prepared to respond to any emergency call, the CCC sources said.
The ward councilors are working in the areas to aware people and are also coordinating different voluntary organisations and non government organisations to face probable consequence of the cyclone.
All fishing boats and trawlers over the North Bay and deep sea have already taken shelter in the bank of Karnaphuli river.
