Mujibnagar Day obsereved in New Delhi, Vietnam

DHAKA, April 17, 2019 (BSS)- The historic Mujibnagar Day was observed
today at the Bangladesh High Commission in New Delhi and Bangladesh Embassy
in Vietnam in a befitting manner.

On this day in 1971, the first government of independent Bangladesh was
sworn in at Baidyanathtala (Mujibngar) in now-Meherpur district naming
Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the president, Syed Nazrul Islam as
vice-president and Tajuddin Ahmed as the prime minister. Syed Nazrul was made
acting president in absence of Bangabandhu who was arrested and jailed in a
West Pakistan prison.

The significance role of the provisional government of Bangladesh played in
leading the nine-month War of Liberation and mobilizing international opinion
and support was discussed at a meeting held at the mission.

The Mujibnagar Day messages of President Md Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister
Sheikh Hasina were read out respectively at the programmes.

“This has been our pride and I feel proud to be associated with this
unforgettable part of our history,” said High Commissioner Syed Muazzem Ali,
a freedom fighter diplomat, while presiding over the discussion at Bangladesh
High Commission in New Delhi.

The discussion was addressed, among others, by Defence Adviser Brig Gen AK
Mohammad Ziaur Rahman, Minister (consular) Selim Jahangir, Counsellor Jamal
Uddin Ahmed and first secretary Zakir Ahmed, according to a message received
here today.

Tributes were paid to Bangabandhu, the greatest Bengali of all times, the
four national leaders– Syed Nazrul Islam, Tajuddin Ahmed, Captain Mansur Ali
and AHM Kamruzzaman. A special prayer was offered for the progress and
development of the country.

Besides, Bangladesh Embassy in Hanoi, Vietnam also observed the day through
various programmes.

Identical programmes were chalked out at the Embassy while Ambassador of
Bangladesh in Vietnam Samina Naz inaugurated the function by hosting the
national flag.

She also paid homage to Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the four
national leaders, the martyrs and the two lakh tortured women of the
Liberation War, said an official release.

A discussion was held and a Liberation War-related documentary was screened
on the occasion.

Officials and employees of the Embassy, resident Bangladeshis of Vietnam
and locals were present, among others, during the discussion.
