2,667 houses built for insolvent freedom fighters

DHAKA, March 14, 2018 (BSS) – The government has already completed construction of 2,667 houses for the landless and insolvent freedom fighters.

“We have taken a project to construct 2,971 households for rehabilitating landless and insolvent freedom fighters while construction of 2,667 have already completed till November, 2017,” Assistant Chief Md Mominur Rahman of Ministry of Liberation War Affairs told BSS today.

“Constructions of 82 households are going on while process is on to float tender for building 216 more houses,” he said, adding that construction of the rest of the houses would be completed by June 2018.

The ministry has already prepared the list of 2,971 landless and insolvent freedom fighters to bring them under the project, in line with the recommendations of the scrutiny committee at upzial and district level.

The government is implementing the household project at 484 upazilas of 64 districts across the country under “Construction of Households for Landless and Insolvent Freedom Fighters” project with an outlay of Taka 271.12 crore.

Under the project, the government will build a 500 square-feet pucca house with facilities of water supply and sanitation.

In addition to this, the government gave approval to a project involving Taka 2773.21 crore few days back for building 8,000 flats for insolvent and landless freedom fighters at upazila levels across the country.

Under the project, 264 multi-storey buildings with two units and 268 buildings with four units will be built and the area of each the flat will be 982 square feet having three bed rooms, one drawing cum dining room, two bathrooms and veranda.

The buildings will be built on khas land of the government and in case of unavailability of those the government will acquire land for the project.

Local Government Engineering Department (LGED) has been entrusted with the task of implementing the project with a target to complete it by June 2020.

The government is now preparing a specific guideline to distribute the flats to the true insolvent and distressed freedom fighters. The guideline will be followed to distribute the flats among children of the freedom fighters after their deaths.
