UNICEF cooperation sought for child-friendly Rangpur city

RANGPUR, Mar 22, 2019 (BSS) – Mayor of Rangpur Mostafizar Rahman Mostafa
at a dialogue here have sought UNICEF cooperation to turn Rangpur into a
child and mother friendly city free from child marriage.

“Today’s children are the future of the nation. So, we must invest maximum
for children to ensure their all rights for turning them into educated and
worthy citizens for building a developed Bangladesh by 2041,” he said.

Mostafa said this at the ‘Dialogue with City Mayor and Councilors’
organised by Rangpur City Corporation (RpCC) with assistance of the UNICEF at
conference room of North View Hotel here on Thursday afternoon as the chief
guest.

Citing UNICEF report, Mayor Mostafa said many children still do not go to
schools in the country where a lot of early marriages are taking place
between 8th grade and 10th grade education of the girl children.

Mostafa urged the UNICEF to continue its activities in all 33 wards of
Rangpur city to increase public awareness about negative impacts of child
marriage and related issues through various programmes in the city.

“We must identify our problems of our urban children and mothers, and
accordingly, we have to take necessary steps to resolve those to turn Rangpur
into a mother and child friendly city,’ the Mayor added.

Presided over by Chief Health Officer of RpCC Dr. Kamruzzaman Ibne Taz,
its Superintending Engineer Md. Amdad Hossain delivered the welcome speech in
the dialogue.

UNICEF Rangpur and Rajshahi Division head Mohammad Najibullah Hameem,
Program Specialist Anwar Hossain, Rangpur City Corporation Panel Mayor
Shamsul Haque and Mahmudur Rahman Titu were the special guests.

Rangpur and Rajshahi Divisional Chief of the UNICEF Najibullah Hameem, its
Programme Specialist Anwar Hossain, Panel Mayors of RpCC Shamsul Haque and
Mahmudur Rahman Titu addressed the occasion as special guests.

Ward councilors of RpCC Tauhidul Islam, Mir Mohammad Jamal Uddin, Sekendar
Ali, Ferdousi Begum, Nazmun Nahar Nazma, Planning and Monitoring Officer of
UNICEF Sonia Afrin and its Education Officer Sifat-e-Islam also spoke.
