1.5-km viaduct visible of metro rail


DHAKA, Jan 20, 2019 (BSS) -Some 1.5 kilometer viaduct, partial structure
of the country’s first elevated metro rail system for Dhaka city, became
visible between Uttara and Agargaon, targeting to complete it by the end of
this year.

“With the installation of many piers, 1.5-km viaduct of the 20.1-kilometre-
long metro rail has become visible and all the construction work is
progressing fast,” MAN Siddique, managing director of Dhaka Mass Transit
Company, told BSS here today.

He said the authority finished construction work of around 150 piers out of
around 400 between Uttara and Agargaon part of the Mass Rapid Transit (MRT)

“We want to set up railway tracks in July,” he added.

Visiting Shewrapa point of the MRT, it was found that workers were seen
busy for the construction work between Uttara third phase and Agargaon point
as the government is set to complete this part first.

The managing director said survey of power line installation for the metro
rail from Tongi is nearly completed, adding, “Now we will lay power cable
through soil drilling.”

“A team will visit Japan in February to oversee mockup train whether it is
correct or need to further correction. The team will also inspect about the
design and other requirements following instruction of the Prime Minister,”
he said.

According to the MRT details, the MRT Line-6 is an elevated system is being
implemented under a fast track priority initiative of the government, which
will run from Uttara to Motijheel and carry some 60,000 passengers per hour
in a day.

Once the MRT Line-6 is in operation, the commuters would enjoy easy-going
traffic and there would no more be any perennial congestion of
transportations in this gradually expanding city.

Earlier, Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina launched the construction work of
the metro rail project, also known as the MRT Line-6, on June 24, 2016.

The MRT-6 is being executed at a cost of about Taka 22,000 crore. Of the
amount, the JICA is providing Taka 16,500 crore to the project, while the
rest of the fund would come from the Government of Bangladesh (GoB), it said.

The 20.1-kilometer MRT Line-6 will run from Uttara Third Phase and pass
through Pallabi, the west side of Rokeya Sarani and Farmgate, Hotel
Sonargaon, Ruposhi Bangla, TSC of Dhaka University, Doel Chattar, Topkhana
Road and Bangladesh Bank.

There will be 16 stations – Uttara North, Central and South, Pallabi,
Mirpur-11, Mirpur-10, Kazipara, Taltala, Agargaon, Bijoy Sarani, Farmgate,
Sonargaon, National Museum, Doyel Chattar, Bangabandhu National Stadium and
Bangladesh Bank.
