High yielding BARI mustard makes farmers happy, helps cut import

NARSINGDI, Jan 3, 2018 (BSS) – Farmers have become happy after cultivating high yielding variety BARI mustard seed in their high fallow lands and vast char areas of the district during the last three years.

Mustard fields which are now in full bloom across the vast tracts of land in the six upazilas of the districts have already worn eye catching yellow looks.

Abdur Rahim, a farmer of Adiabad village under Raipura village of the district said the cultivation of BARI mustard has gained much popularity among the farmers of the district as they are getting desired production and also fair prices of the cash crop in recent years.

Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office sources said farmers in the district have cultivated over 3860 hectares of land during the current season with the hope of getting production of 5800 tonnes of mustard.

Terming the mustard as eco-friendly, Deputy Director, DAE Narsingdi Latafat Hossain said the Department has provided quality seeds, necessary inputs and training on the latest technologies for good yield of mustard seed.

He underscored the need for using the latest agro-technologies and disseminating proper knowledge to the farmers for increasing mustard seed to achieve self-reliance in edible oil to reduce the dependence on import.
