EC rejects appeal of JP leader Ruhul Amin Hawlader

DHAKA, Dec 07, 2018 (BSS) – The Election Commission (EC) today rejected the appeal of Jatiya Party leader Ruhul Amin Hawlader for contesting the 11th parliamentary election from Patuakhali-1 constituency.

On the second day of its hearing on appeals against rejection of nominations by returning officers during scrutiny, the EC declared Hawlader’s candidature invalid on the ground of loan default.

At 10 am today, the EC resumed the hearing on the second day at its office in city’s Agargaon area.

Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) KM Nurul Huda, Election Commissions Mahbub Talukder, Md Rafiqul Islam, Begum Kabita Khanam and Brigadier General (Retd.) Shahdat Hossain and EC Secretary Helaluddin Ahmed were present in the hearing.

On the first day (Thursday) of the hearing, the EC settled 160 cases. Of them, 80 candidates got approval by the EC while the candidature of 76 was rejected.

Besides, the EC stayed the candidature of four aspirants. The rejected nominees can appeal in the high court.

The 11th parliamentary election will be held on December 30 while the last date for withdrawal of candidature is December 9. The candidates can run their campaign after getting symbol on December 10.
