Attack on police at Naya Paltan planned: DMP

DHAKA, Nov 15, 2018 (BSS) – Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) Commissioner Md Asaduzzaman Mia today said the Wednesday’s sudden attack on policemen in the city’s Naya Paltan was deliberate and planned.

“The sudden attack on police in front of BNP office at Naya Paltan was planned. Two vehicles of police were totally gutted and 23 policemen, including five officers, were injured in the attack. All of them are undergoing treatment at hospitals,” he told a press briefing at DMP headquarters here.

Police have already got confirmed from various sources about the identities of those involved in the attack, the DMP commissioner said, adding all of the attackers are members of the BNP and its front organisations.

“Three cases were filed to this end. Sixty people have so far been arrested from the place of occurrence. We’ve identified 30 people involved in the attack after scrutinising video footages. And efforts are on to identify the remaining people involved in the attack,” Asaduzzaman said.

He said the Detective Branch (DB) and police officials of Mortijhee zone have been entrusted with conducting investigations into the cases in a fair and neutral manner.

The DMP chief said BNP leaders and activists attacked the police personnel when they requested them to free the road, which they occupied with big processions violating the electoral code of conduct.

During the attack, he said, they used long sticks. “How such long and big sticks were brought at the spot without any plan?”

“We confirmed that the attack was a plot to instigate police to create anarchy aimed at foiling the upcoming general election,” Asaduzzaman said, adding that the attack was unexpected and the entire world had witnessed the incident through media.
