Deal inked with China to procure 200 meter-gauge coaches

DHAKA, Nov 4, 2018 (BSS) – Bangladesh and China has signed a deal for
purchasing 200 meter-gauge (MG) passenger coaches for Bangladesh Railway at
cost of Taka 927.52 crore.

Project Director Mrinal Kanti Bonik and Chinese state owned rolling stock
manufacturer — China Railway Rolling Stock Corporation (CRRC)’s vice
president Chen Jianpeng signed the agreement today on their organisations’
behalf at Railway Bhaban in the capital, said an official release.

As per the contract, the manufacturer company will supply all the coaches
between 20-27 months.

“A total of 270 coaches have already been added to Bangladesh Railway (BR)
fleet during the tenure of the present government,” said Railway Minister Md
Mujibul Haque while attending the contract signing ceremony.

Around 200 meter-gauge and 50 broad-gauge coaches will arrive from
Indonesia by the end of this year, the minister noted.

Apart from this, procurement of more 50 meter-gauge coaches and 100 meter-
gauge coaches for Padma Bridge project is under process from the Republic of
Korea, he added.

Speaking on the occasion, the minister said that the government has already
taken initiatives to refurbish the neglected railway sector. He added that
drastic changes will take place in the railway sector if the ongoing projects
are implemented properly.

Railway Ministry’s secretary M Mofazzel Hossen, Director General of
Bangladesh Railway Quazi M Rafiqul Alam, representatives from the
manufacturer agency and other concerned officials, among other, attended the
ceremony.
