Remain ready for climate change to ensure food security: Experts

RANGPUR, Oct 16, 2018 (BSS) – Agriculturists at a post-rally discussion today called for remaining ready for climate change, innovating and adopting effective technologies to keep crop production increasing for ensuring future food security.

They made the call at the discussion held at conference room of the Deputy Commissioner here in observance of the World Food Day- 2018 with a view to build a hunger free world by 2030.’

The district administration, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) and Department of Food with assistance of Rangpur unit of Consumers’ Association of Bangladesh (CAB) chalked out programmes to observe the day.

Earlier, a huge rally was brought out on the city streets with participation of government and NGO officials, students, teachers, civil society members, public representatives, farmers, professionals and local elite.

With Deputy Director of the DAE Agriculturist Dr Sarwarul Haque in the chair, Deputy Commissioner Enamul Habib attended the discussion as the chief guest.

Deputy Director of the DAE at its regional office Agriculturist Md Moniruzzaman, its District Training Officer Agriculturist Aftab Hossain, District Controller of Food Shahjahan Bhuiyan and President of local CAB Abdur Rahman addressed as special guests.

General Secretary of local CAB Morsanul Haque Tuhin, its Field Coordinator Iqbal Hossain and Field Officer Naznin Akhter also spoke. Agriculturist Haque in his welcome speech discussed tremendous successes achieved by Bangladesh in increasing food production in last ten years to attain food security despite adverse impacts of climate change.

The speakers said that ensuring of sustainable food security might not be possible without continuous innovation and adoption of climate resilient agriculture technologies to keep crop production increasing despite changing climate.

Agriculturist Aftab Hossain stressed on adaptation to climate change through innovating time-befitting agricultural technologies and stress tolerant crop varieties to increase food output in all seasons round the year.

Terming agriculture as the worst affected sector due to climate change, Agriculturist Moniruzzaman called for evolving climate resilient and stress tolerant crop varieties and newer cropping patterns to attain sustainable food security.

The chief guest stressed on innovating time-befitting agriculture technologies to increase food output for ensuring sustainable food security despite attaining laudable success in the agriculture sector.
