Ruman’s Olympic mission ends after fighting show

DHAKA, July 27, 2021 (BSS)- Ace archer Ruman Sana's Olympic mission finally came to an end today when he went down by a fighting 4-6 set points defeat to his Canadian rival Duenas Crispin in second elimination round of recurve men’s individual event held in Tokyo.

The ace archer won the first round against Tom Hall of Britain by a comfortable 7-3 set points before losing against the Canadian.

Ruman narrowly won the first sets by 26-25 points but he lost the next two sets by 25-28, 27-29 points.

Ruman however came back to fight winning the fourth set by 26-25 points before losing the deciding set by 25-26 points.

Earlier, he beat English archer Hall Tom in the first of elimination round. The first set ended with a 28-28 draw before Ruman posted two straight sets win by 27-25 and 27-26 points. However, the top archer lost 25-27 points in the fourth set before winning the match-deciding fifth set by winning 29-27 points.

Bangladesh's other archer Diya Siddique will play her individual round matches against Dziominskaya Karyna of Belarus scheduled to be held on Thursday (July 29).

Earlier, Ruman pairing with another promising archer Diya Siddique got off to a good start on the opening day of Tokyo Olympic as they finished 17th and 36th respectively  among the 64th competitors in the recurve individual qualification round event.

Ruman scored 662 out of 720 while Diya Siddique scored 635 out of 720. The duo also made it to the 16-team recurve mixed team final event as the last team with a collective score of 1297.

Though archers Ruman and Diya however eventually eliminated in the pre-quarter-final stage of recurve mixed event losing to top ranked Korea.    

The country’s top archer Ruman fulfilled the expectations of all by winning the first round, a round in an event like the Olympics which means something huge. If he could reach the pre-quarters, it would not only be a milestone in Ruman Sana's career, he could have taken the name of Bangladesh even higher.

Ruman Sana's elimination from Olympics made the nation sad but not less proud. An archer from Bangladesh directly qualified for the 'The Greatest Show on Earth' Olympics and advanced to the second round after defeating Britain's Archer in the first round.
Though Ruman’s Olympics journey ended finally but his talent clearly indicates that he will go further ahead with the red-green jersey in the future.
