DHAKA, Sept 26, 2022 (BSS) - Dhaka University Vice Chancellor Dr Md Akhtaruzzaman today said family and educational institutions have to play pioneering role in preventing suicide among the youths.

"More detailed and fundamental research needs to be conducted on the cause of suicide. Identifying the cause of depression, educational institutions, families and concerned should provide enough mental courage to the students," said Akhtaruzzaman.
 
He was addressing a seminar as chief guest marking World Suicide Prevention Day-2022 at RC Majumder Arts Auditorium on Dhaka University campus, said a press release.

DU Educational and Counseling Psychology department, Association of Therapeutic Counselors, Bangladesh [ATCB] and Psychiatry department of Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University organised the event.

Akhtaruzzaman said students should be encouraged to participate in co-curricular activities including art, culture and sports along with study.

A 'Student Promotion and Support Unit' has already been established at the university to provide various support to the students including involving them with different institutional work, he added.

Chairman of BSMMU psychiatry department and Prof. Dr. Jhunu Shamsun Nahar presided over the program while President of Bangladesh Association of Psychiatrists Professor Dr. Wajiul Alam Chowdhury, former chairman of DU Clinical Psychology Department Professor Dr Mohammad Mahmudur Rahman also spoke, among others.
