SC acquits two death-row-convicts in Rajshahi double-murder case

DHAKA, June 23, 2022 (BSS) -The Appellate Division of the Supreme Court (SC) today acquitted two people convicted and sentenced to death in a case lodged over murder of one Miliara Khatun and her daughter Pervin in Godagari upazila in Rajshahi district in 2006.

The apex court also commuted death sentence of another convict to life imprisonment.

"Criminal Appeal No-47 of 2015 with Criminal Appeal No-15 of 2015 are allowed and Jail Appeal No-24 of 2014 is dismissed with modification of sentence," a three-member Appellate Division bench headed by Chief Justice Hasan Foez Siddique said in its order.

Advocate Helal Uddin moved the appeals before the court, while Deputy Attorney General Bashir Ahmed stood for the state.

Miliara Khatun and her daughter Pervin were brutally murdered on October 10, 2006. A lower court concerned convicted and sentenced three accused Esmail Hossain Babu, Sonadi and Torikul Islam to death in 2008.

The High Court after holding hearing on the appeals of the convicts and death reference, upheld their death sentence. The three convicts later appealed against the High Court judgment.

The Appellate Division today came up with its judgment after holding hearing on the appeals.
