CHATTOGRAM, Nov 29, 2021 (BSS) - City Mayor Rezaul Karim Chowdhury today
announced to stop the use of polythene, one of the main materials for
environmental degradation, in three city's major kitchen markets from
December 1.
City Mayor declared Chawkbazar, Kazir Dewari and Karnafuli markets as
polythene-free markets in the city from December 1.
Rezaul Karim, at a rally, said that it is essential to stop the use of
polythene as it causes pollution and water logging in the city.
"Other raw markets and shops will be brought under the polythene
initiative programme in phases with the help of city dwellers," he added.
Initially, the activity will be conducted through creating public
awareness.
Nurunnabi, Director of Environment directorate delivered, the welcome
speech while CCC CEO Shahidul Alam, Councilors Nurul Haque, Shahed Iqbal
Babu, Md. Shafiqul Islam, Md. Jabed, Anjuman Ara Begum, Hure Ara Begum,
Shaheen Akter Rozi, Rumki Sengupta, Taslima Begum (Nurjahan), Jahanara Begum
Poppy, CCC secretary Khaled Mahmud and private secretary to the mayor
Mohammad Abul Hashem, among others, addressed the function.
Two other meetings were held in the city to create awareness regarding ban
of polythene use.
