KHULNA, Sept 4, 2022(BSS) - A court here today sentenced 17 people to life-term imprisonment for killing father and son at Terokhada upazila of the district in 2019.
 
Judge Md Nazrul Islam of Khulna Special Trial Tribunal pronounced the verdict in presence of all convicts.
 
The court also fined Taka five thousand each, in default, to suffer one more year in jail.
 
The convicted criminals are chairman of Chhagladah union parishad S M Din Islam and his associates Md Abdur Rahman, Jamir Sheikh, Sheikh Saiful Islam, Khalid Sheikh, Eskendar Sheikh, Jashim Sheikh, Hossain Sheikh, Ziarul Sheikh, Baharul Sheikh, Abbas Sheikh, Wahidul Gazi, Khairul Sheikh, Keramat Mallick, Mahbur Sheikh, Babu Sheikh and Nur Islam Sheikh.
 
The court also acquitted two people as the charges against them were not proved. They are Abu Sayeed Biswas and Ayub Sheikh.
 
Public Prosecutor Md Ahaduzzaman told BSS that criminals killed farmer Piru Sheikh, 55, and his son Nayeem Sheikh, 22, of Poholdanga village under Chhagladah union of Terokhada upazila in Khulna centering long standing family feud and establishing supremacy over the area.
 
Following a hectic altercation, criminals equipped with lethal weapons entered the thatched house of Piru Sheikh by digging his mud room around 2.00 am on August 7, 2019.
 
They indiscriminately hacked Piru Sheikh on the head and other parts of the body tied with hands and legs. Hearing his screaming, Nayeem Sheikh and his mother Mahfuza Begum come forward to save Piru Sheikh. Criminals chopped Nayeem indiscriminately.
 
Both father and son were rushed to the local health complex where the duty doctor declared Nayeem dead. His father Piru Sheikh was sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) and later shifted to Dhaka for better treatment. He succumbs to his injuries two days after his admission.
 
Mahfuza Begum, wife of Piru Sheikh, filed double murder case with Terokhada Police Station against 17 as naming and others unidentified 10 to 12 accused on August 10, 2019.
 
Police filed charge sheet to Khulna court accusing 19 of the double murder case, the Public Prosecutor added.
