RANGPUR, Feb 14, 2022 (BSS) - A court here today sentenced top terrorist Ariful Islam alias Pichchi Apel of Rangpur city to 19 years in prison with labour after five years of his arrest with illegal arms and ammunition.
Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB)-13 arrested Pichchi Apel with a foreign origin pistol, a magazine and two rounds of live bullets from a place near Modern Mour area in the city on July 25, 2017.
Judge of the Senior District and Sessions Judge Court Md. Shahenur handed down the verdict in absentia of the convict this afternoon.
Convict Pichchi Apel is the son of Mohammad Ali of Munshipara in Rangpur city.
Additional Public Prosecutor of Rangpur Advocate Nayonur Rahman Topi told reporters that a number of criminal cases, including murder cases, are pending against Pichchi Apel with different police stations in Rangpur.
Deputy Assistant Director of RAB-13 Md. Nur Islam filed a case against Pichchi Apel after his arrest with illegal arms and ammunition with Tazhat police station in the metropolis.
Police submitted a charge sheet against the accused person to the court after investigation into the case.
"After examining six witnesses, the judge sentenced Pichchi Apel to 19 years in prison today and directed the police to arrest the fugitive convict," said the Additional Public Prosecutor.
