CUMILLA, Dec 2, 2021 (BSS)- Main accused in the double murder of an Awami League leader and Cumilla City Corporation councilor Syed Md Sohel and his associate Haripada Saha was killed in a gunfight with police in the district in the early hours of today.
The deceased was identified as Shah Alam, 28, son of late Janu Miah, of Sujanagar Purbapara at 16 number ward of Cumilla. He was accused in different cases including a murder case.
Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Model Police Anwarul Azim confirmed the matter to BSS.
He said, the district DB Police and Kotwali Model Thana police jointly conducted a drive in the Chanpur area adjacent to the embankment of Gumti river area around 1:30am after being tipped off that a group of terrorists were staying there.
“Sensing presence of the police, the terrorists fired on them. In reply, police also fired back. Later, Shah Alam was injured and found lying in the area. Later, he was sent to Cumilla Medical College Hospital where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” he said.
Two policemen sustained injuries in the gunfight, the law enforcement claimed. They were admitted to Cumilla police hospital.
Earlier on Monday night, two other accused in the case were also killed in a gunfight with police.
Police also recovered a 7.65 pistol from the spot, OC added.

On 22 November, councillor of ward no. 17 Syed Md Sohel and his assistant were killed while five others sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire at his office in Pathuariapara in the city.
The councilor’s younger brother Syed Md Rumon filed a murder case on 23 November accusing 21 people including naming 11 people.
