Two accused of Cumilla councilor murder killed in 'gunfight'

   CUMILLA, Nov 30, 2021 (BSS) - Two accused in the murder of Cumilla city corporation councilor and city Awami League member were killed in a gunfight last night.

   The deceased were identified as Md. Sabbir Hossain, 28, son of Rafiq Miah, resident of Sujanagar area and Sajon, 32, son of Kakon Miah, resident of Sanraish area.

   The gunfight took place in Songraish Balumohal area of Cumilla at around 1am last night.

   Police said Sabbir is number 3 accused and Sajon number 5 accused in the case filed over the murder of councilor Md Syed Sohel and his associate Haripada Saha.

   Cumilla District DB Police Officer-in-Charge (OC) Satyajit Barua told BSS the teams of detective branch and Kotwali police station rushed to the Songraish and Nobogram areas of the city on Monday night on a tip-off. When a team of cops reached Beribadh area, the accused opened fire, forcing the police team to retaliate.

   After the gunfight, police rescued the two seriously injured persons and rushed them to Cumilla Medical College and Hospital, where they were declared dead on arrival. Later, they were identified as Sabbir and Sajon, said the OC.

   Three cops also received bullet wounds in the gunfight and two of them have been admitted to a hospital, the police officer said adding a 7.75 pistol, a pipe gun, bullet casings and some ammunition were recovered from the spot.

  On November 23, councilor of ward no. 17 Sohel and activist of Awami Leauge were killed while four others sustained injuries when gunmen opened fire in his office in Pathuariapara.

   Councilor Sohel's younger brother Syed Md Rumon filed a murder case against 11 named people and 8 to 10 unnamed people with Kotwali police station.
