RTI is a must to empower mass people: speakers

  RAJSHAHI, Sept 28, 2021 (BSS) - Terming the information as power speakers at a meeting viewed full-length implementation of the Right to Information (RTI) law is very important for empowering the public side by side with making all the public services transparent and accountable.

   Unhindered flow of information by all government and non-government organisations concerned needs to be ensured for expediting development and ensuring good governance everywhere in the society.

   The observations came at a discussion organized by district administration at Shilpakala Academy auditorium marking the International Right to Information Day-2021 here today.

   Commissioner of Rajshahi Division Dr Humayun Kabir addressed the discussion as the chief guest, while Commissioner of Rajshahi Metropolitan Police Abu Kalam Siddique and Additional Deputy Inspector General of Police Muzahidul Islam spoke as special guests.

  Prof Prodip Kumar Pandey from the Department of Mass Communication and journalism at Rajshahi University presented a keynote paper portraying the aspects of successful implementation of RTI law. Chaired by Deputy Commissioner Abdul Jalil, the meeting was addressed, among others, by Superintendent of Police Masud Hossain, Divisional Deputy Director of the Department of Secondary and Higher Education Dr Shormin Ferdous Chowdhury and Editor of Daily Sonar Desh Akbarul Hassan Millat.

  Chief Guest Dr Humayun Kabir said the government is very much confident and working relentlessly for successful implementation of the law. The field level government and non-government officials concerned should be positive to supplement the government effort.

  As long as the law is not implemented by the government and non- government organisations, its strength, weaknesses, limitations and appropriateness cannot be ascertained.

  "Implementation of RTI Law has become indispensable for the sake of establishing good governance in the society and enhancing transparency and accountability in all tiers of public services," Dr Kabir defined.

  Proactive disclosure of information regarding all development works at the grassroots can ensure proper utilisation of resources and put a check on corruption, he mentioned.

  He also observed that the designated officials of the information-giving government and non-government organisations have a vital role to play.
